A classic celebrates its birthday. In February 2010, the legendary and now deceased musician, poet and author Gil Scott-Heron released his thirteenth and final studio album. “I’m New Here” was Scott-Heron’s first album in thirteen years. It was and is an album that reveals something unexpected at every turn; an album that propelled Scott Heron to push the boundaries, to explore and to test as he always had; always looking forward, still defying convention and expectation. To mark the tenth anniversary of the release of “I’m New Here”, XL Recordings releases a unique reinterpretation of the album by acclaimed Chicago musician Makaya McCraven. Known and respected as a musician, drummer, beatmaker and producer, McCraven is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and original greats in modern jazz thanks to a series of records for Chicago label International Anthem that simultaneously elude and redefine the genre. Recorded and produced in his Chicago home studio with a variety of musicians, “We’re New Again” McCraven fuses live improvised musicianship and electronic, sample-based parts with recordings of Gil Scott-Heron’s distinctive vocals, the resulting record is a sonically A rich, highly original and deeply respectful companion piece to Scott-Heron and Russell’s original work, it represents the latest stage in the development of a record previously reissued by Jamie xx on 2011’s “We’re New Here”. At the same time, the original album will be released in an extensive birthday edition with previously unreleased versions and tracks.
