In the 1960s and 1970s, Nigeria experienced a musical heyday, which also found an audience on the other side of the black continent in the form of Afrobeat and Afrofunk. One of the protagonists were The Funkees, who could already be heard on the “Nigeria Special” sampler, which was also released on Soundways Records. In the early ’70s they were the only ones who could really threaten Lagos bands like Mono Mono and BLO. The compilation “Dancing Time: The Best Of Eastern Nigeria’s Afro Rock Exponents 1973 – 77” documents the dance music qualities of the eastern Nigerian troupe, whose live skills were legendary. They often played all night long, seven days a week. It didn’t take long , UK promoters called in. The Funkees relocated to London, where they quickly made a name for themselves with their performances, where they recorded two seminal albums before splitting up in 1977. “Dancing Time” contains 18 great grooving afro-funk tracks -Songs.
